This ketogenic, or keto, diet aims to induce a special metabolic process called ketosis in our body. When our body enters ketosis, we tend to break down fat to produce the required energy as there are not enough carbohydrates present to burn. The process has earned its name from the chemicals that are produced by the liver, called ketones, during the burning of fats.
Proponents of weight loss and the keto diet say that the induction of ketosis will lead to a greater breakdown of fats in the body and the person can be a healthier version of themselves. However, there are certain points one must consider before deciding to pick up the diet.
Pros of the Ketogenic Diet
- A normal human body breaks down carbohydrates accumulated from the diet to derive energy. In a keto diet, you are denying your body no or less carbohydrate and hence the metabolism looks towards fats to produce energy. This means that you lose fat quickly.
- As the fat gets burned down pretty quickly, people with low metabolism no longer need to stick to low-fat food items and can enjoy delicacies like red meat, cheese, fatty fish, nuts and butter. It is a win-win situation as you get to lose weight while gorging on high-fat food.
- This keto diet has been found to help with certain ailments. For example, it can help in reducing seizures in pediatric patients with epilepsy.

Cons of the Ketogenic Diet
- Ketosis is difficult to achieve because the rules of a keto diet are pretty stringent. If a person fails to stick to their diet, then the loss is far greater than the benefits.
- Along with the low carb intake, the diet restricts the intake of vitamins, minerals, and fibres as well.
- It is not good for heart health, simply because of the high-fat nature of the diet.
- Given the increased percentage of ketones, our kidneys find it hard to process and may often fail under the increased pressure.
